Everything you need to know about retainers – your smile’s best friend after braces
You’ve finally completed your orthodontic journey. The braces are off, your aligners are out, and you can’t stop admiring your perfectly straight smile in the mirror. But before you celebrate too much, there’s one final and very important step in keeping that smile perfect: – wearing your retainer.

At Queen clinic, we know that retainers often don’t get the attention they deserve. However, they play a crucial role in maintaining the results you’ve worked so hard to achieve. Our experienced orthodontists make sure that every retainer is custom-designed for maximum comfort, effectiveness, and long-term stability of your new smile.
What is a retainer and why is it important
A retainer is a custom-made dental appliance designed to hold your teeth in their new positions after orthodontic treatment. When braces or aligners move your teeth, the bone and soft tissue around them need time to stabilize. Without proper retention, teeth naturally tend to shift back toward their original positions — a process known as relapse.
That’s where your retainer comes in. It acts as a gentle but firm guide that keeps your teeth aligned while your jawbone and gums adjust to their new shape.
Types of retainers
At Queen clinic, we offer usually two types of retainers:
1. Removable Retainers
These are the most common type of retainers and can be taken out when eating, brushing, or during special occasions.
Mobile retainers are worn mostly at night. They are transparent, made of a special type of plastic, comfortable and very easy to wear. They look like foils for teeth whitening.

A fixed retainer consists of a thin wire bonded to the inner side of your front teeth — usually on the lower jaw. It’s not visible when you smile, and it works 24/7 without you having to remember to wear it.

Permanent retainers are ideal for patients with a higher risk of teeth shifting or those who prefer a maintenance-free solution. Regular cleaning and dental check-ups are important to keep the area around the wire plaque-free and healthy.
How are retainers made?
Retainers are generally made by printing the foils or adapting the foil to the model using a vacuum.

How long should you wear a retainer?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The duration depends on several factors, including your age, the complexity of your original orthodontic treatment, and how your teeth respond after braces.
Generally, orthodontists recommend wearing retainers full-time for the first 3–6 months after braces are removed. After that, most patients can switch to nighttime wear indefinitely.
Here’s the golden rule:
Teeth can move at any age — so retainers are for life.
Wearing your retainer regularly ensures that your teeth remain beautifully aligned for years to come. Skipping it for even a few weeks can allow subtle shifts to occur, undoing months or years of hard work.
How to take care of your retainer?
To keep your retainer clean, odor-free, and in great condition, follow these simple steps:
- Rinse it after each use with cool water to remove saliva and debris.
- Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste – it can be abrasive).
- Soak it weekly in a special retainer cleaner or a mild denture-cleaning solution.
- Avoid heat — never leave your retainer in hot water, a car dashboard, or near a heater, as high temperatures can warp the plastic.
- Store it safely in its protective case when not in use.
If you ever notice cracks, looseness, or discomfort, schedule a quick check-up with our orthodontist. We can repair or replace your retainer to ensure it continues to fit perfectly.
DO not worry for materials or any reaction on them.
All materials are biocompatible, safe, and hypoallergenic. At Queen clinic, we use only the highest-quality materials from trusted dental laboratories to ensure your retainer is comfortable, durable, and long-lasting.

What to expect when wearing your retainer?
At first, you might feel a little tightness or pressure — that’s perfectly normal! It means your retainer is doing its job.
Within a week or two, most patients say they barely notice they’re wearing a retainer. The key is consistency: the more regularly you wear it, the easier it becomes.
Even if you are not a user of our services, but you have a problem with the retainer, it is lost, broken, etc., feel free to contact us. We are sure we can help you.
With proper care and regular visits to Queen clinic, you can enjoy a life time of confidence every time you smile.
