Receding gums

Gum recession

Gum recession is a condition in which the bone and gums recede and expose the tooth or root of the tooth. Although it is seen on the outside only as a recession of the gums, this is a sure sign that there has been a recession of the bones under them.

It is a common phenomenon and can be localized on one or more teeth.

Why does gum recession occur?

The causes are different and individual. Improper brushing of the teeth, i.e. rough brushing and trauma to the gums can cause pulling of the gums and bones. Poor oral hygiene can cause inflammation of the gums, which then separate from the teeth, creating pockets in which plaque and food additionally accumulate. Over time, these pockets may deepen, gums continue to recede, and teeth may wobble.

Uneven chewing pressure transmitted to the bone, improper bite or incorrect tooth position favor the occurrence of this phenomenon. Unfavorable anatomical conditions, such as a narrow attachment gingiva or a high attachment of the muscles of the lips and cheeks, which pull the gums away from the teeth by their movement, also contribute to all this. We would mention aging and excessive smoking as additional risk factors.

Gum recession is not only an aesthetic defect but also a health problem. Bare tooth roots become sensitive to heat stimuli. If left untreated, the condition becomes more serious and leads to tooth loss.

It is important to know: once the gums begin to recede, they do not return. This means that spotting and treating the problem at the earliest stage is crucial.

How is gum recession treated?

Treatment primarily includes eliminating the cause and only after that treating the damaged area. Gum recession is successfully repaired with surgical methods, which our experts will tell you more about after a careful assessment of the current condition.

Recession of the gums at the very beginning often goes unnoticed. Patients notice the problem only when there is significant tissue damage, which is why regular examinations and timely diagnosis are of special importance.
