LAST (WISDOM) TOOTH REMOVAL

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably received a recommendation to have one or more last teeth removed. You may feel confused, a little worried and wonder if the procedure is really necessary. And that is exactly what we will explain in the rest of this text.

Do you really have to have your last tooth removed?

We are here to provide you with professional information and a safe solution. Our team of specialized dentists in Belgrade uses the most modern methods and techniques for painless wisdom tooth extraction – whether it is a classic or surgical procedure.

Is the last tooth removal optional?

Many people think that wisdom tooth removal is optional, especially if there is no pain, but in most cases, it is the best decision to preserve long-term oral health.

Wisdom tooth, or third molar, is the last tooth to erupt, usually in the late teens or early twenties. The problem arises when it doesn’t have enough space to grow properly, which can lead to a number of complications.

Trapped wisdom or last tooth can cause infections, pain, cysts, and even damage adjacent teeth. Although it does not always cause obvious symptoms, these problems often appear suddenly and can lead to more serious complications if not treated in time.

Should wisdom tooth removal be done even if it doesn`t hurt?

Many people believe that last tooth is only a problem when it hurts, but this is not always the case. Wisdom tooth impaction can create serious problems even if you don’t feel pain right away. It can be the cause of infections that develop silently, without obvious symptoms, or they can damage the surrounding teeth and gums. And what exactly is wisdom tooth impaction?

It happens when last tooth does not have enough space to properly grow out of the jaw.

The last tooth is completely trapped under the gums and often do not erupt at all. It can cause cysts, infections, or it can move other teeth due to the pressure they create.

Precisely for these reasons, dentists often recommend preventive wisdom tooth removal before problems become serious.

Wisdom tooth impaction

And what if my last tooth is partially erupted?

It is actually called a semi-impacted wisdom tooth.

If the last tooth do not fully erupt, a pocket is created between the tooth and the gum, where bacteria can easily enter and cause infection. If this is not treated, the infection can spread and lead to more serious oral and health complications.

LAST TOOTH REMOVAL – what kind of removals are there?

There are two ways your wisdom tooth removal can be done.

Yes, you have surgical and normal extractions, and no, they are not the same!

So what’s the difference?

Normal extraction: When everything goes according to plan.

A normal extraction is like pulling a standard tooth – you may have had it when you were younger. The dentist uses local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth and, using forceps, carefully removes it.

Sounds simple, right?

That’s because it is – if the tooth is fully grown, the dentist can easily reach it and “spin” it out without much trouble. You won’t even feel anything but the pressure.

This is the version of the story where everything goes according to plan, without the drama. The tooth just comes out, you recover in a couple of days and everything is fine.

Surgical extraction: When the last teeth plays “hide and seek”

But sometimes a smart guy likes to be “stubborn”. It does not grow properly, or remains partially buried under the gums, or worse – trapped under the bone. At that point, your dentist says, “Okay, we need to get a little more serious here.” And that’s where surgical extraction comes into play.

Think of your last teeth as an archaeological find, but not easily accessible. The dentist must make a small incision in the gum to access the tooth. Sometimes it is necessary to remove part of the bone so he can take out last teeth. This sounds scary, but in reality, the procedure is completely painless because the dentist uses local anesthesia or, in some cases, sedation. No horror movie, just surgical precision.

Why surgical wisdom tooth removal?

Surgical extraction is often necessary for impacted wisdom tooth – the tooth that does not have enough space to erupt from the jaw, and remain trapped under the gums. Sometimes you don’t even feel the pain right away, but the last tooth makes haos beneath the surface – it presses on the surrounding teeth, causes infections or, in the worst case, forms cysts. If you do not solve the problem in time, the situation can become much worse, and the wisdom tooth can damage the neighboring teeth.

“But isn’t the recovery from surgical last tooth removal longer?”

This is a common concern of patients – everyone thinks that surgical removal will knock them out of the game for weeks. However, it is not quite like that. Of course, recovery is a little longer than with a normal extraction, but most patients return to normal activities within a few days. Yes, you may experience slight swelling and discomfort, but this is temporary and fully controlled with the analgesics your dentist will recommend.

How long does recovery take after wisdom tooth removal?

I know most of you immediately think of weeks of pain, swelling and soup as the only meals, but the reality is often much easier.

On average, recovery takes 3 to 7 days, and how you feel depends on several factors.

Were the last tooth fully erupted or trapped deep in the jaw? Did you have a surgical extraction or a regular, “standard” procedure? All of these can slightly lengthen or shorten your journey to a full return to form.

The first 24 to 48 hours are crucial. You can expect some slight swelling there, maybe some bleeding, but nothing that can’t be solved with a few cold compresses and rest. You may feel discomfort, but this is where analgesics come in – your best friends in this process. The next couple of days will be crucial for the pain to subside and the swelling to subside.

But here’s the important thing – most patients feel much better after the third day. You may not be snacking on crunchy apples just yet, but you can get back to your daily routine, just without the strain.

If you had a surgical wisdom tooth removal, recovery may take a little longer, from 10 to 14 days, but this is rare. It is important to listen to the dentist and follow all his recommendations, because taking care of the wound, rinsing with saline solution and avoiding hard food can significantly speed up the process.

Here’s how we take out last teeth

Detailed review and discussion

Before we start anything, it’s important that we understand your case down to the smallest detail. We do a detailed examination and use x-rays to see exactly where the last teeth are located, if there is wisdom teeth impaction, and how it interacts with the neighboring teeth. This step is crucial because every wisdom tooth removal is not the same. Based on that, we plan the entire procedure, and we explain it to you right away. There is no rush, no pressure – everything is explained to you in detail.

Local anesthesia

When we start the procedure, the first thing we do is local anesthesia. When we say local, we mean that there won’t be pain during extraction. Instead, you may feel a slight pressure, but nothing terrible. Our anesthesia is adjusted so that you are maximally relaxed and without any discomfort.

Wisdom tooth removal – Normal or Surgical?

If your last tooth is not trapped under the gums, the procedure is extremely simple. The last tooth is carefully and quickly extracted using instruments, without any complications. But if your last tooth is impacted, ie. trapped under the gums or bone, we proceed to surgical extraction.

Surgical wisdom tooth removal sounds scarier than it is. We make a small incision in the gums to free the tooth, and sometimes it is necessary to remove a small part of the bone around the tooth. All this is done with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue. Finally, we place the seams if necessary. And again, you feel nothing but a slight pressure.

Postoperative care

After tooth extraction, we are not done – we are here for you during the recovery period as well. You will receive all the necessary information on how to care for your wound, including advice on nutrition and hygiene in the first few days. Cold compresses, soft food, and avoiding physical activity are key factors for a quick and painless recovery. Also, we are always here for you if you have any questions or if something doesn’t go right.

And what is the price of last tooth removal?

Unfortunately, there is no single price for this procedure, because every wisdom tooth has its own story, and that story dictates the price. Here are some factors that affect it:

Position of teeth

If your last teeth are fully grown and easily accessible, extraction will be simpler and therefore less demanding. But, if there is wisdom teeth impaction, i.e. last teeth are trapped under the gums or bone, the procedure becomes more complex and requires surgical intervention, which of course affects the price.

The complexity of the procedure

Some last teeth are real little puzzles – maybe they’re close to important nerves, or they’re positioned to require more work. The more complex the procedure, the more expertise and precision it requires, and therefore the higher the price. With us, everything starts with a review, where we analyze your situation in detail and, based on that, determine the exact steps and costs.

Necessary procedures before or after wisdom tooth removal

In some cases, additional preparation of the tooth or surrounding tissue may be required, which may also affect the cost. It may be necessary to treat the gums or perform some preparatory procedures before the wisdom teeth removal.

Therefore, before we give you any price, it is best that you come for an inspection. Or at least send us your x ray. It is the only way to accurately assess what is needed, how complicated the last teeth are, and what is the best way to do it. In this way, you will get an accurate picture and all the necessary information – there are no hidden costs or unpleasant surprises.

After the review, you will get a clear picture of the procedure and costs, and we will make sure everything is clear and stress-free.
